Develon Series 9 crawler excavators are taking construction site safety to a new level with intelligent technology designed to help operators see hazards sooner, control machine movement and protect people working nearby.

Busy construction, quarrying and earthmoving sites can change by the minute. Limited visibility, moving plant and people working close to machinery all create risk. Develon’s latest smart safety options address those challenges with cameras, radar sensors, artificial intelligence and automated intervention.

The system brings together Smart All-Around View Monitoring (SAVM), a Human Detection System, E-Stop and Virtual Wall technology. Rather than relying on a single warning, these features provide layers of support that help the operator understand what is happening around the excavator and respond before a situation becomes critical.

Why excavator safety technology matters

Even an experienced operator cannot watch every angle of a large crawler excavator at the same time. Blind spots, noise, changing ground conditions and unexpected pedestrian movement can make busy work areas particularly demanding.

Develon’s approach is designed to supportβ€”not replaceβ€”trained operators and properly managed site procedures. By combining better visibility with visual warnings, audible alerts and automatic movement control, the Series 9 safety package can add an important extra layer of protection.

How Develon Smart AVM improves visibility

The Smart All-Around View Monitor uses up to six high-definition cameras and three radar sensors to monitor the machine’s surroundings. According to Develon’s supplied technical release, the system can scan from a detection range of up to 13 metres and give the operator a real-time 360-degree view.

Seven selectable viewing modes allow the operator to check the front, rear, left and right sides of the excavator through the in-cab display. When the system recognises a person, it provides immediate visual and audible alerts.

Key operator benefits include:

  • Improved awareness around the full machine
  • Reduced reliance on mirrors alone
  • Clearer visibility in congested working areas
  • Visual and audible warnings when personnel are detected
  • AI-supported human recognition designed to distinguish people from objects

What is Develon E-Stop?

E-Stop is an intelligent safety function developed specifically for the excavator market. Working with the cameras, radar sensors and Human Detection System, it can reduce machine speed or stop selected movements when a person enters a defined safety zone.

Develon compares the principle with emergency braking technology used in the automotive industry. The supplied release describes two main intervention zones:

  • Yellow warning zone: the operator is alerted and the machine automatically begins to slow from 6 metres.
  • Red danger zone: swing and reverse movements are automatically stopped when a person is detected within 4 metres.

The three-stage process combines HD camera detection, operator warnings and speed reduction, followed by automatic stopping when the danger threshold is reached. Because the system is designed to recognise people, it aims to provide meaningful intervention without unnecessary stops caused by stationary objects.

Virtual Wall helps operators set safe boundaries

Virtual Wall allows the operator to define limits for the excavator’s working envelope. Depending on the machine specification, boundaries can be set for height, depth, reach and swing movement.

This can be particularly valuable when working:

  • Near overhead cables or structures
  • Alongside buildings, traffic routes or site boundaries
  • In confined urban areas
  • Close to buried services or restricted digging zones
  • On sites where several trades are working in the same area

By preventing the machine from moving beyond a predefined limit, Virtual Wall can help reduce the risk of contact with people, structures and equipment while also supporting more controlled operation.

A layered approach to safer construction sites

No single feature can remove every site risk. Effective safety still depends on operator competence, planning, exclusion zones, communication, maintenance and compliance with the site’s safe system of work. The value of Develon’s technology is that it adds several intelligent layers to those established controls.

For fleet owners and contractors, the practical advantages may include:

  • Greater operator confidence in high-traffic areas
  • Better protection for groundworkers and other site personnel
  • Earlier warning of potential collision risks
  • Less chance of costly contact with structures or equipment
  • A consistent safety aid across operators and shifts

Which Develon machines offer these safety systems?

The announcement applies to Develon’s smart Series 9 crawler excavator range, including the DX230LC-9 and DX260LC-9. Availability, operating distances and individual functions can vary by model, market and configuration, and some features are offered as options.

Before ordering, speak to the Kellands team about the exact safety package available for your preferred machine and application. We can help you compare specifications and choose equipment suited to the way your site operates.

Talk to Kellands about Develon Series 9 excavators

Choosing a new crawler excavator is about more than digging performance. Visibility, operator support and intelligent safety systems can make a significant difference throughout the machine’s working life.

To discuss Develon Series 9 excavators, optional safety technology, availability or a machine demonstration, contact Kellands Plant Sales or call our machine sales team on 01278 411542.

Safety features are operator-assistance systems and do not replace trained personnel, risk assessments or established site controls. Specifications should be confirmed for the individual model and configuration.
